What Kids Need From Their Parents - Day 1
Kids need things. They need things from you as their parents. Some of them are obvious, some of them, maybe not so obvious. And at times it can feel overwhelming … THEY NEED SO MUCH! And at different stages of life, they need different things. A baby needs different things than a toddler. A toddler needs different things than an teenager. A teenager needs different things than my 18yo heading off to college. I know you get the point.
The good news is the bible gives us a lot of advice on the matter. Everything from spiritual to practical. So let's look at what the bible says …
Let's start with the practical:
Provide for them
Kids need things. They need the basics … water, food, clothing, shoes, a warm and safe place to lay their head. They need an education … whether that's high school education, a trade, college … they need to be taught to make a living. Give them the basics.
Teach them the things of God
Their relationship with God will be the single most important decision they ever make in their life. It's more important than school, more important than who they're going to marry. It is our responsibility as parents to teach them and lead them towards God.
Deuteronomy 6:7 says: "You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."
This verse is talking about the commandments Moses was giving the Israelites. This is right after the 10 commandments. And Moses says, obey these commands, live them out, and TEACH them to your children.
And that's what we are to do … teach our children about God's commands. The good news is we are under grace … so if we mess up we can be forgiven. But teach all of that to your kids. If you don't know how to teach that to your kids, I know a good church ;-). Here at RED Church, we'd love to help you. But teach them about God. As a result, God says He'll give you a long life.
